This has resulted in significant research commercialisation activities and collaboration between our leading researchers and industry.

The Faculty of Science & Engineering comprises more than 200 professors with almost 3000 undergraduate students and more than 400 PhD students in a wide range of experimental disciplines as well a number of taught postgraduate programmes..

The Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science & Engineering and offers both undergraduate degree programs and taught postgraduate programs. Postgraduate research is also an important part of the Departmental activities, with graduate students reading for Diploma, Masters and Doctoral degrees in a wide range of experimental disciplines.

The Thermo-Chemical Conversion research group with the leadership of Dr JJ Leahy is focused on advanced biomass strategies and technologies. The vision is a future whereby our energetic and chemical needs can be met sustainably from renewable, non-fossil, resources and that biomass will play an important role in enabling this. Expertise covers a range of disciplines including: chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, soil sciences, agronomy, and feasibility studies.
