Welcome to Issue #8 of ReUseWaste News. In this issue, we present news of a new review about slurry acidifcation authored by ReUseWaste partners, two new and interesting research briefs by ReUseWaste fellows as well as other news items of interest. 

Biochar properties effect on CO2 and N2O emissions in soil 

Raghunath Subedi, ReUseWaste fellow at University of Turin, has prepared a research brief about his work investigating the influence of biochar properting on gaseous emissions following soil amendment. Read Raghunaths research brief

Fast and reliable characterization of organic wastes by FTIR

George Bekiaris, ReUseWaste fellow at the University of Copenhagen, has prepared a research brief telling about his work about a new technique for manure characterization. Read Georges research brief 

ReUseWaste review about slurry acidifcation published

ReUseWaste PI's David Fangueiro and Fabrizio Gioelli have together with colleague Maibritt Hjorth just published a review in Journal of Environmental Management:"Acidification of animal slurry - a review". The review has been conducted in order to fully understand the global impact of slurry acidification and assess the applicability of this treatment for slurry management. Congratulations!

Two ReUseWaste articles currently in press

ReUseWaste fellows André Santos and Yong Hou are both lead authors on two papers recently accepted for publication. Andrés paper, Carbon conservation strategy for the management of pig slurry by composting: Initial study of the bulking agent influence, is currently In Press in the journal: Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change. Yong's manuscript, entitled Mitigation of ammonia, nitrous oxide and methane emissions from manure management chains: a meta-analysis and integrated assessment, was recently accepted by Global Change Biology and is now online. Congratulations to André and Yong and the co-authors of these papers!

III International Symposium on Organic Matter Management and Compost Use in Horticulture

The 3rd International Symposium on Organic Matter Management and Compost Use in Horticulture will be held in Murcia (Spain) on 20-24th April 2015. The symposium is aimed at bringing together scientists around the world working on areas of organic matter management and compost use in horticulture.

The symposium will cover different aspects including nutritional issues (N use efficiency and P recycling) and the implication on global food security, different environmental and health issues associated to the use of compost in agriculture, and also a reflection on novel organic amendments and future needs to ensure its safe use and commercialisation. Deadline for abstract submission is 31st December 2014.

2nd European Sustainable Phosphorus Conference

The second European Sustainable Phosphorus Conference (ESPC2) will take place in Berlin, 5th – 6th March 2015. The conference will cover the following themes, particularly showcasing success stories and business cases and involvement of the Baltic, Black Sea and Mediterranean areas.

  • P losses and environmental impacts

  • P from farm to plate

  • Food security and international phosphorus supply

  • Reuse of P and P-recycling

  • Progress made addressing the Phosphorus Challenge

ReUseWaste Seminar held in Lisbon

David Fangueiro at ISA-UL recently organised a seminar about the experience of PhD fellows in the ReUseWaste project. After David introduced the project to students, three ReUseWaste Fellows presented their work and experiences: Thanos from UCPH, Iria fro ISA-UL and André from CEBAS-CSIC. Take a look at the program for the day
